out adventurin'

adventure.

thursday evening was our departure date. heather got to my house around 7pm. i was part way down the stairs.  i threw my pillows and softies down ahead of me and my bags were strewn about the stairs where i hoped they could be reached from the bottom.  heather lugged the wheel chair out of the car.  at first she was ambitious about carrying it up the stairs but soon followed a wiser path of leaving it in the laundry room on the bottom floor.

i hobbled into the front passenger seat and heather tossed all our stuff in the back.  then we were on our way.  heather was all wound up.  she was stressed about her first live (zoom) seminary class and had been listening to the election debate.

we made it in plenty of time and we got parked on the upper deck--my favourite.  the lane was so narrow and we were next to a wall and i couldn't get out without heather backing up a little. an old man honked at us.  "now an old man is honking at me!" said heather, and threw up her hands.  but i was able to get out and the old man seemed calm enough when i hobbled past him to get to the elevator.

the elevator let us out right in front of the cafeteria.  "how fortuitous." i said to heather. she agreed.  i took the wooden stool we brought for my foot and went and sat down and heather got the food.  bc burgers, fries, and two cakes!  it was heather's birthday eve and she got us a chocolate cake to split and a cheesecake to split.  we were both pleasantly surprised with the quality of the chocolate cake.

heather worked on her seminary lesson and i swallowed many comments and questions that came idly to my mind while she was thus occupied.

once off the  ferry we set out to find bethany's place.  when we found it with a sharp intake of breath.  bethany's place is blessed with an intimidating drive way especially in the dark.  it's steep and it's curved, ok.  heather vroomed up it as best she could and pulled straight in behind a red car. we both wondered how she would back out the next day.  i called bethany to see where we were allowed to park. turns out 'we' (as in heather) had to back partially down and pull in beside another car on the side.  i got out and heather very bravely managed it.  i couldn't look.  i thought she might tip over.  but she didn't.  bethany came and helped heather carry in all our stuff.

we were shown to a bedroom with a queen size been and a large blow up unicorn head.  we could hear a chorus of crickets from the window and one frog.

next morning i was awake by 5am. heather was up maybe six thirty, i think?  she went to the washroom, trying to be quiet but the door squeaked really loud and it made us both laugh.  she had to open and close it several times too because the light was in the hall and she hadn't realized that.

when it was time for her zoom lesson i left the room and did my scripture study from bethany's styleesh green couch in front of a beautiful ocean view.  later heather invited me to scoff at her when she asked "so is that the ocean?"  but in ontario lakes look like oceans so.  anywho.  biffy got up and proceeded to make us the yummiest double stacked quesadillas known to man.  mine had egg, cheese, chipotle mayo, pesto and bbq chicken.  i was served it on her butterfly plate that she coloured in kindergarten.  before eating breakfast though i was getting up from the couch, but instead slithered to the ground.  "is that how you always get up from the couch?" inquired bethany with a mild type two soft gentle humour.  i bopped her nose.  no i didn't but i should have.  i was doing my exercises and had to lie on my back on the floor and do the bridge and then extend each leg.  before that i examined her extensive and surprising sea glass collection.  she has them in turquoise bowls that should belong to me, all separated by colour.  she is a self-proclaimed sea glass finding expert and it appears this is true.

when heather came out she was all releif that her first class was over.  we had a yummy meal together an then we all had to hurry and get ready to leave because bethany had to work.  i was the weak link because everything takes me an extra long time.

before attempting to back out of her precarious spot, heather and i said a prayer.  then she did it so easily like she's been doing it all her life.

we drove to save on and heather went in to buy some food and i stayed in the car, brushed my teeth, and shame-facedly spit my toothpaste out on the parking lot, trying to cover up my sin with water.  i did my make up too.  and arranged myself in the back seat. i found i could put my foot up on the console and i had a pillow under it.

when heather came back she had 2 paper bags full of goodies.  one thing she got was the world's best trail mix.  we are talking roasted nuts, dried CHERRIES, mini mini peanut butter cups...you get the deluxe picture.

before we could start on our way heather needed to pee.  she tried at mcdonald's but they said she needed to be a customer so she went to the gas station and while there she saw a huge cone of candy.  it said 'the big kahuna' on it but on my instagram story i accidentally put 'the big kahone'...means very different things.

then we were off.  that was the first leg of our journey.

Staying at Bethany's sounded so fun I am envious. What is the difference between the meaning of the two words?
