edmonton happenings

i took 2 days off.  heather and i flew to edmonton early thursday morning.  the round trip tickets only cost us 54 dollah.  we flew out of abbotsford.  i may have lost my old phone there.  i know i took it out to do my duolingo on it.  that was the last time i saw it.  i wasn't ready to let it go.  it's got 5.5 years of history on it.  it has memos full of my inspirations and revelations... and passwords.  there's a slim chance i lost it at karey's.  i hope it's deep in her couch or in the dark depths of her trunk.

edmonton was...cold if we are talking weather.  while heather stopped to pee i pulled out my hot pink coat.  i bought it in january for 44 dollars and it hasn't been cold since.  karey was found walking slightly leaned over holding the hand of her tiny tot katie who was walking the corridors of the baggage claim area holding a tim bit.

our first stop was ikea.  karey said they have bulk candy now so naturally that is a legit reason to stop in.  that and, one dollar hot dogs and 'fruit water'.  we went a little crazy.  karey's cost 6 something and mine cost double that and heather's cost even more but she did a redo and came in at a modest 5 dollars.  she supplemented  those with a package of sour gummies--lemon lime and RHUBARB.  we had them today on the way home from the airport.  heather rightly said the rhubarb tasted like stewed rhubarb.  why is sour such a great flavour?

we spent the rest of the day chilling, playing with katie and talking. karey has a great couch for chilling.  it's super deep.  heather took up residence on a chair across, and we all had our preferred blankies.  we watched survivor.

we looked at old photos.  who is this kid?

al made us amazing steak tacos.  and we indulged in treats from their recent mexico trip.  later that night we walked up to whyte ave to a chocolate place called cacao 70.  it took us a long time to decide what we wanted because there were a lot of intriguing options. in the end heather got a mexican hot chocolate.  karey got an amazing looking banana split.  the banana had a caramel...shell on one side??  karey didn't like that but i think it upped it a notch.  i got a chocolate peanut butter fondue.  karey and heather thought the peanut butter was weiwd but i dug it.

i had a wild night tossing and turning and half sleeping.  i woke up at 5 with the blankets hanging off the bed.  they were heavy blankets and i had to heave them back up.  i was awake.  and i stayed awake but tried not to, if you know what i mean.  i didn't come upstairs until 9 i think.  karey had a yummy smoothie waiting for us and some mini muffins.

we ended up going to west ed mall but first we stopped at swiss 2 go, a swiss bakery that has these amazing tea cup cheese cakes.  i saw a vanilla slice and had to buy it and karey bought us a raspberry and a lemon cheesecake to share.  we all bought sandwiches and at them at the mall.  i got the hiker.  it had sausage and boccoccini and blasamic drizzle. they were on these super ssssuuuuper good pretzel buns, soft chewy and salt chunks on top.  heather had a time with the guy who wouldn't give her pickles on the side, only in the sandwich. to get her way she had to pull the pickles out after getting in the car.  we ooohed and awwwed over cute clothes for katie.  we saw some sea lions.  a lot of people were staring at me and i finally realized it was my OH PHO SHO shirt.

that afternoon karey put katie down and left to go do a ministering visit. the sound of katie's music was making me drift off, so i went to have a nap and heather had some fun reading and then taking care of katie.

karey made us mango chicken with her instant pot.  vicki arrived and we gathered to eat storm chips and our cheese cakes and vanilla slice.  even the saucer the teacup cheese cakes were on were made from chocolate.  everything was yum.

saturday morning there was some excitement when we witnessed an altercation in the street.  a guy had thrown a woman to the ground and was yelling in her face.  i went outside to yell at them but the guy wasn't paying attention to me.  so we called the police.  while i was talking to them a police car pulled up so someone else called already.  that got my adrenaline going.

i had to quickly get ready because i had to meet up with nuria and her new husband awais to do a photoshoot.  we went to this garden center in sherwood grove.  it had an inside garden with a waterfall and pond we we thought it would be a nice place to do some shots in wintery edmonton.  however.... it was so busy and full of people.  there was some event going on with different tables up about different plants. doing a photoshoot around that and making it look like we were the only ones there was pretty fun and funny.
i liked these fat yogis at the garden center

i was worried about nuria so it was nice to see that her husband was very soft spoken and kind and gentlemanly and patient with her.  carrying her bag and doing up her zipper when she asked...doing anything she asked basically.  she almost threw up in the car ride there.  she is newly pregnant and smells are horrendous to her.  she has lost all desire to eat.  i had a nice time with them.  awais has a really cute smile.  after the shoot he dropped us off at a restaurant.  it was supposed to be pasta, nuria's favourite, but it was pizza, nuria's least favourite.  but weirdly she ordered pizza and weirdly she could eat it.  my pizza was super good.  goat cheese, grapes, pine nuts and proscuttio.  i had it with a kale caesar.

awais picked us up, and dropped me off and i joined the girls at the house. it had been snowing all day and it was -14.  when al got home from his d and d our plan was to go to the movies.  karey's cousin dawn still works at the movies. she's a manager there and she gave us free passes and coupons for free popcorn.  we saw the new emma (jane austen).  oh my gosh it was so good.  the comedy in it is perfect.  it's gorgeous and the music was different--folky.  and of course it was romantic.  i want to see it again already.

the snow storm was still raging when we finished.  we decided to eat at brown's social house.  there was a 20 minute wait so we waited around the fire in the patio. but the fire didn't give much heat.  we talked about our favourite foods.  i find it easier to say what my favourite flavours are. some of my favourites...  favourites are hard. there are too many possibilities out there!

when we were seated there was a couple by us who we imagined were on a first date.  at one point he moved his chair around to beside her and i was all "it's going well..." but he was showing her photos.  i got a blackened chicken southwest rice bowl and karey and heather got the cowboy salad with grilled chicken (personally i think you are missing out if you skip the 'blackened' part of it  but to each their own), vicki got the howlin hot chicken sandwich with extra jalapenos added.

our plan was to go get some exciting pops from the pop shop with all the weird and interesting flavours but we were too late.  so we went to the grocery store.  we were picking out pops from what they had and noticed how many different root beers there were, so we decided to get all root beers and do taste comparisons instead.  karey got really cute shot glasses from mexico with sugar skulls on them just for this purpose.  so we had our root beer shots and comparisons.  al joined us.  it was fun.  my favourite was the caramel cream one.  there was this weird one that had cinnamon, and cloves in it.  it made my tongue numb.

facing the prospect of an early flight home and daylight savings, we went to bed.

i woke up at 5 thirty again.  but it was really four 30. haha.  flight home was uneventful.  it was -25 when we left.  there were no rotton mangos in heather's bag this time but i got checked for my toothpaste and heather for her deodorant.

at abbotsford airport i was checking if my phone had been handed in.  first i asked at the info desk who sent me to the airline counter who sent me to the guest services kiosk outside. that lady had to then go check inside.  heather spread her coat out on the went bench of a stone picnic table and we sat down and we ate grapes that she so wisely made us buy, and pizza buns.  then a guy drove up and asked if we saw a bug.  "a bug?" i asked.  no we didn't see a bug...whatever bug he was talking about.  then he asked to use my cellphone.  so i called a number for him and it wasn't answering so he asked me to text.  and that he missed his flight and this girl was trouble but he loved her and he had lots of money his phone had just died... it was sketch.  but he gave me five dollars and wouldn't take it back.... i hope i didn't text some code about a drug deal or something worse.  it's all about paige and sandy.  what drama.

in the middle of that drama the lady came back. there was no phone.  insert sad face here.

Ps. Birds nest rattail single braid is my new look

You have such a fun life. I enjoy living at vicariously.Hmmmmmm I wonder if you're a foodie. Take out all the comments about food and I wonder what would be left. With dad the hospital and coming home to an empty house I have been experimenting and creating some strange things and feeling a little bit like you. A tiny bit.
