saturday-pre thanksgiving

saturday began with a race.  i was awake but still in bed  when barb and tall t came into the living room from their bedroom, "good morning sleepy head", said tall t and then told me about this race we needed to watch.  so we watched it.  it was the attempt to run a marathon under 2 hours.  t explained that some billionaire was funding this race where all the conditions were perfect just to see if it could be done. there was a pace car and the marathoner, the fastest marathoner, a guy from kenya of course, his name is eliud kipchoge, he was running surrounded by other runners who helped him keep his pace.  and those runners would take turns, get subbed in and out etc.  and there were guys on bikes riding beside and behind.  it was all a very controlled environment and the record would not be official because of all these things.  they just wanted to see if it could be done because no one had broken the 2 hour limit.  kipchoge had set the world record at 2 hours and 1 second.  anyways that was fun to watch. barb brought me a kind of rice pudding thing to eat where there is a pocket of jam on the side that you add to it.  and kipchoge made it.  they did what they set out to do.  he ran it in 1 hour, 59 minutes and 40 seconds.

saturday was the day we got ready for thanksgiving.  barb and i took our backpacks with us on the bus and went downtown.  our target was once again the turkish market.  but first we stopped at a turkish restaurant.  i wanted to have a kabob, basically a donair/shawerma, but i saw the iskander kabob on the menu and remembered ordering that in turkey and it being so good.  so i ordered that.  barb got the donner kabab.  the iskander was ok.  kind of meh.  i had it in istanbul before and it was swimming in sauce and yogurt.  this one had a little side dollop of yogurt.  and the flavour was not wowie powie if you know what i mean.  but it was fun to have and barb felt proud that she ordered in norwegian.  i of course spilled on my shirt and i had nothing to hide my shame with.  so on we went to the turkish market where i showed my shame to everyone.  and everyone was there.  it was sooooo busy.  the little side room with all the veggies, which we were buying a lot of was so crazy.  just to get from one end of it to another required patience, agility, aggressiveness, and making yourself and your cart disappear into thin air.  it was in this room that i dropped my phone out of my wallet and had no idea.  luckily a lady found it on the floor and gave it to me.  it was also in this place that a lady pushed me and barb and it turned out to be a lady who worked there!  however in the end we got a lot of stuff and we loaded up our back packs and headed out.  we made a stop at another grocery store looking for a few last things and had a fun time trying to say frozen in norwegian to a lady who worked there. we were looking for frozen lingon berries so i could make lingon berry sauce instead of cranberry sauce.  did you know that lingons are wild mountain cranberries?  kind of like their wild mountain cousin.  they are a lot smaller in size but still quite tart.  but finnally the lady got it and was all "ahhhh frössna!" and brought us to a box of frozen lingon berries.  we caught the bus at the bus loop and rode back to barb's neighbourhood in åssiden but before we went home we stopped at one more grocery store across the street.  i just waited outside on the chair with all our groceries and gave barb the money to buy some bread for stuffing but then she called me and was like i have garlic bread we can use for stuffing and i was like ok dude that will work.

that night we got to work.  we roasted a butternut squash to use for our pie, made apple crisp, the lingon berry sauce, attempted a pie crust from a recipe that was really weird but also super condescending "if you can fold a napkin you can make this recipe", made the 'pumpkin' custard for the pie and made the stuffing.  there was a moment when barb got sassy with me about the stuffing but we got beyond it.  basically the dumb pie crust recipe had us staying up late waiting for it and then the crust went real wonky in the oven and totally sagged down the sides and we looked at it in despair  and went to bed.

meanwhile turkey was having a nice cold bath on the balcony.
