mm!

listening to the rain fall.  it's a familiar and comforting sound.

yesterday morning i left early to check on the member at the job site that we trained last week.  he was doing well.  then i made my way over to pricesmart.  i go there every monday morning and buy the food we need to make lunch that day while the others are out doing the big shops for the whole week.  i also get things that you might not be able to find at superstore.  pricesmart has the whole asian side.  where i can find things like gochujang, the korean chili paste we put in our home made kimchi that's going on the new menu, and gau ban sauce, the szechuan bean and chili sauce that you make mapo tofu with....also on our new menu.  they also have a better mexican section than superstore.  they have enchilada sauce, for example (yes, enchiladas on the new menu).   anyways i was winding my way through the aisles in my methodical secondary type 4 manner when i passed an older black lady.  i noticed her down one of the aisles because she was murmuring to herself.  like looking at a bottle in an aisle and then a perfunctory "mm!".  she had on a long coat of some sort and a turban-esque covering on her head.  later she showed up behind me at the till.  i was waiting as my cashier bagged the items, as he was finished with the bag he'd hand it to me, and i'd place it in the cart.  that's when this lady showed up in the line.  she had the look of someone who wanted some attention. i smiled at her and she smiled back.  i was turned away from her when i heard a big crash.  she had lifted her green pully basket, you know the little ones you can pull behind you on wheels?  she had lifted that up and crashed it on the conveyor belt on it's side and some of the things spilled out.  "oh my gosh. do you need help?" i was in the middle of saying when she said "girlfriend i have got the flu!" then coughed and did another of the perfunctory "mm!"s. "oh--"i said "don't worry i will not cough on you!" and she laughed follwed by some airy coughing. "ahh--"i said "i just had to get out to get some coffee!" her voice went up on coffee.  "i can't live without my coffee!" this time the word coffee went up so high into an airy whistle of another cough and she doubled over.  i looked at my cashier to see how he was taking it all in.  he looked straight ahead scanning my items and bagging them with absolutely no expression.  i felt like he had gone to his happy place long ago. i soon paid for my groceries and as i turned to leave i told the lady to feel better.  " thank you for caring!" she breathed, already engrossed in giving the robotic cashier his instructions.  as i left the store i couldn't help but smile to myself and chuckling inwardly.

we made sloppy joes for lunch and i had all these helpers show up.  it was great.  it's a better problem to find enough work for people to do than have so much work and not enough people.  meanwhile i had sent the shoppers off early and they returned early too which was nice because at 11 i had to go downstairs and participate in the interview for the new program director.  we were interviewing tanya our current housing manager.  the very same who started exactly a year after me and who i found in the parking lot on her first day and called her newbie.  of course she's come a long way since that day and has been housing manager for 10 years.  everyone in the panel, there was 8 of us, members and managers and dave was for tanya. we also got to say our concerns and dave did a good job in listening to those.  i think it will be good.  and maybe it will be great.  afterwards lisa and colin and barb and i stayed to debrief.  it's good to have good co-workers you can talk to.  then i stopped by dave's office and together we dealt with an issue with sunlife.  well it's not an issue.  it's a gradual return to work that's going to be happening.

when i finally got back upstairs lunch was over.  i ate my sloppy joes and big salad and then we held a social planning meeting.  we invite everyone to join us and we brainstorm social activities for the upcoming month and then make the final choices and calendar them in.  then i go around and let staff choose which social they would like to do that month.  i'm doing pumpkin carving because i lurv it and i do it most years.

nuria is back but she is doing the social so she didn't come in until the afternoon.  it was good to get caught up with her and her travel adventures.

i still have a lot to do to get ready for my trip and i'm leaving next thursday!  can't believe it.  also it was last night or the night before that i looked down at my feet and saw that they were back to themselves.  i mean they've been swollen and puffy for over a month at least and they were so painful last week.  and when i looked at them, there they were.  little and weird and boney and muscly.  not a single puffiness.  and nothing had changed.  i don't know what it was.  was it the big broccoli salad? was it a weekend off? (but i walked a lot on saturday and i had a whole week off in august--that's when they started hurting).  i don't know.  all i know is that i prayed for them to be healed.  and they were.  thanks to the Mighty One who hears and answers prayers.
