snowmageddon

what is with this winter?  it's time for me to put a firm foot down.  february is for the start of spring, not a huge snowstorm.  pffft.  so much snow is kind of a novelty though.  to look up frequently from my bed where i spent the day editing photos and to see fluffy flakes floating past snow laden evergreens, is kind of magical.  i finally had to take a break though, in the evening and buy some groceries, take out my tithing money, and most importantly from archie and izzy's point of view, buy cat foods.  hot lips was not so keen on leaving her snug snow cove in the drive way.  her tires spun a bit, but i overcome her resistance and soon we were slippin and slidin on our way to the closest shopping centre. the snow was so deep on the road, that it skimmed the bottom of hot lips hoolihan as we skiied down the side roads.  i do pride myself in maneuvering a car in snow.  i mean i did learn to drive in fort mcmurray after all.  but there were a few fleeting moments when i thought i was going to get stuck.  there was hardly any packed down snow in the side roads.  just random tracks in the deep snow.  luckily i made it.

so i did my errands and then on the way home i took the main roads to play it safe. and all was well.

so i was now on the couch watching showz and editing photos.  i face the window and suddenly there was a flash of light and immediately a crash of thunder.  like it was right over my house!  what is going on, i said to myself.  so self, looked up thunder storms during snow storms and apparently it's called thundersnow and it is a thing that happens in later winter when conditions are just right.  that was pretty exciting.

did i mention that i have what may be my 3rd or 4th cold since december?  well i do.  but i wanted to go to church, so i got out early to brush off my car.  the snow was frozen on so i had to chip it off with some violence.  again i had to complete several tries to even get out of the drive way, but eventually i escaped.

it was fast sunday and our stake is fasting for missionary opportunities.  there were some great testimonies.  i love my ward.  but i was feeling worse and worse so i decided to go home after sacrament meeting.  i told my 1st councellor and then i headed home.  but as i entered the driveway it was so slippy slidy and loose icy snow chunks.  i decided i should shovel out the back end where i back out so i wasn't stuck the next morning when leaving for work.  i knew that i should not go inside or i might not ever come back out, and i knew it was mild out at that moment so there was a little bit of melting going on.  so i grabbed downstairsdave's shovel and shoveled off my stairs, the back walk, the side walk and then a path to my car.  then began the long and arduous task of shoveling out the road behind my drive way and the back of my drive way.  it was hard work and my shoulder is still sore, but i'll just say those times i broke up huge slabs of ice?  those were satisfying. i felt like i should do the whole driveway but after 2 hours i just didn't have the mojo to do more so slumped back up to my place.  at first i was so hot and then i was so cold and couldn't get warm again for a long time.  also after i stopped all the physical activity, i had a chance to feel my symptoms of the cold again.

soon after i was back inside it started to snow hard again.  hmph.

tomorrow's a big day.  first day of the new menu.  you know what that means.  this time i gave us a month to get ready for it and so that part of it was less stressful.  but you never totally know how it's all going to go--will the combination of dishes that we chose be just a lot of work and crazy-making, or will everything be so smooth?  one difference is that no one knows how to make anything so i have to do a lot of directing all at once.  usually people will adopt certain things and become experts on it and know how to make it without any or little direction by the end of the menu.  this last menu for example peter, who comes almost daily and has his own chef hat, was a honey lime acorn squash and garlic naan specialist.  now i will spend my time answering a lot of questions at once, which sometimes can make me prone to snappiness.  we'll see how it goes!
