"see the poppy, notice the red..."
this morning i woke up with a stiff swollen hand. i held it out in front of me sort of bewildered by its state and practiced bending my fingers. i slept in longer than i meant to. it was eight oh clock and i meant to get up at 7:30 and have a shower. i shrugged this off rather easily and got dressed. fed the cats of the low swinging fur ruffed bellies. did my checking--checking of blogs, checking of facebook, and checking of email. edith got up and had a shower. we ate breakfast. mine was peanut butter sourdough toast and mango jam--remnants of amy's visit.
speaking of the bus, there was a bus incident. a trouble maker. an older lady got on the bus and was going for one of the empty seats and this guy sitting on the facing forward courtesy seats started yelling at this kid on the facing sideways courtesy seats to stand up. the kid didn't know what was going on and it later turned out he was going to visit his mom in the hospital. the trouble maker bully guy looked to be around 18. he kept picking on this kid and yelling and saying things like "you want to join your mom in the hospital?". me and edith wanted him thrown off the bus. then the bus driver got involved and the guy started lipping him off then the bus driver started swearing and before it was all over the bus driver was enraged. the kind of enraged when you can almost see steam coming out of the person's ears.
we got to the square at the same time as parts of the parade. it was so crowded and full of umbrellas. we didn't have much time to maneuver and ended up in the back, like behind the choir and the dignitary's stand. so through the maze of umbrellas i could see some faces of the veterans who were facing us.
this is the lady's umbrella who was right in front of me. at times it was resting on my stomach (i was a step up from her) and at times it was dripping on my purse, which i tried to protect. however i started staring at the beads of water on her umbrella and wanted nothing more than to take a picture of it. so i did. i didn't have my umbrella up because there was no room and it would block people's view. but i did get to enjoy someones umbrella dripping on my shoulder from time to time. edith managed to get hers up but was very conscious of not dripping on others.
i saw people in the building across watching and listening from their windows. i wished that i lived in that building. ok so victory square isn't the most savory place on most days, but it looks like a cool building and you can watch remembrance day from your house every year. i saw a family all gathered together and watching.
i enjoyed singing abide with me, which is tradition in vancouver and singing o canada and god save the queen. i liked the student poet's poem. i liked the prayer that was said.
after the ceremonies were over edith wanted to go to the bay to christmas street so we did. and of course we came up with all these plans and ideas of what we're going to do to decorate this year. edith loved the polar bear display and wanted a picture. i told her to go into the christmas tree forest. you can see her little head there amongst the ever greens.
we found sparkly feathery birds with clips and naturally clipped them in our hair.
after the bay we were hungry but we were going to the imax and didn't have time to stop for anything on the way and so ended up eating popcorn and almond glossettes for lunch. we saw the wild coast 3d. who knew the great importance of the sardine to ocean ecosystems? there were these birds hunting the sardines, they dive from 100 feet above. they looked like darts hitting the water. they looked creepy under water.
i was cold after that because my clothes were damp and i was tired. we caught the bus at waterfront station. i thought i had 18 minutes to wait so i wandered down the sidewalk to take pictures of this statue
but then edith comes over and says "the bus has come and gone and you need to be at the bus stop." haha. apparently the sign lied to us. edith said it went from 18-15-11 minutes to arriving in very quick succession. just as she was saying that i needed to be at the bus stop another bus was sighted and we booted it back to the stop. this bus was quite empty for much of the trip and there were no more incidents.
when i got home i had a candle lit bath but not for too long because i got bored and hot.

amy aside: ! when amy was here we had the most delicious paninis of apple wood smoked white cheddar, black forest ham, roasted red pepper, mango jam and mustard on the sourdough bread. soooooo good. amy's idea. we came up with the ingredients standing together in front of the deli counter in the save on in ladner after a full morning of bird watching. she also chose 3 large chocolate chip cookies and i chose a family pack of mojos for our lunch. we both agreed to the picante breaded wings, an item i personally later regretted.edith and i planned to go down town for the remembrance day ceremonies at victory square. i wanted to go in person for once. but the rain made us doubt. i knew it would rain--it always rains. edith asked me on a scale of 1-10 how much i wanted to go. on the spot i decided that i would go even by myself. so she said she would go too. elicia got up before we went. i borrowed her umbrella. she was very concerned that i not leave it on the bus.
