nanaimo weekend

riday after work i packed in a big rush and picked up heather from her work. we drove out to the ferry together and then she drove home. i got one of the new ferries--coastal inspiration, i think it was called. i sat reading my camera manual for a while. across the way a guy strummed on his guitar. then i got up to explore. the new ferries are really nice. you walk on to deck 5 but it's been closed both times i've been on it. deck 6 has the cafeteria, gift shops and cofee shops. 'sitka cafe', one of them is called. deck 7 is the sun deck and that's where i want. these are my toes on the sun deck. it was a gorgeous night and not cold at all on the sun deck. i'm going to say sun deck a bunch more times.

me on the sun deck. there's a loving couple behind me. later i moved more into the bow and took a bunch of silly pictures. i was trying to see how close to my eye this lens would focus so i was taking a lot of myself when this guy, who i didn't notice came over to me and asked me if i wanted him to take my picture. "i notice you are taking a lot of pictures of yourself." he added. uhhh... yah i was, but doesn't mean i wanted him to take one. i sheepishly said it was ok, he didn't have to take my picture. "are you sure?" he asked. what he really wanted was for me to take a picture of him and his buddies. they were all against the railing staring at me. funny how i get caught up in taking pictures of my eyes and digits and don't know there's a bunch of people watching me. so i took their picture and then went back to my photo world and re-ignored them.

the sky was very dramatic.

i like this one.

sarah and adriel picked me up at duke point when i got there. at first adriel thought i was martha. "nerfa!" he greeted me.

back at sarah and kyle's me and sarah spiced ourselves up for the spice lounge. sarah flat iron curled my hair and then curled her own. we left at around 10 and thought we'd be late but we weren't. we weren't near to late. sarah nabbed the first parking spot available and we walked down the hill to the spice lounge. as we arrived at the door it was just when one guy was escorting some girls up the stairs. another guy, rail thin and deeply creviced was smoking. he had shoulder length stringy gray hair. he looked us over with what i would later describe to sarah as a 'lewd look' and said "you ladies have id?" we dug in our purses and i asked him if we show it there since he was just standing staring at us. he told us to go to the top of the stairs. sarah and i don't know the rules for spice lounges. so at the top of the stairs we saw the other guy and he asked us for id. he swiped it in a machine and pointed a camera of some sort at our faces. to tell you the truth, i don't mind being ided at the tender age of 34. after the id-ing experience was over we looked around and saw basically no one until all the boys trailed out of the vip room. we talked a bit and sarah and i noticed the tips of my two big toenails glowing. we thought that was weird and tried to get kyle or evan to take out their toes but they both refused because they're deeply ashamed of their feet. sarah and i went to to the washroom to do some 'business'. the lights were out and we couldn't find the switch. i say, "let's just go anyways." sarah says she wouldn't be doing this if she was alone. we feel very adventurous. later when washing our hands in the dark we almost simultaneously begin dancing in the mirror. when we came out the id guy saw it was dark, reached in and switched on the light and it was over just like that.

eventually they began their first set and eventually we (me, sarah and jen) parked ourselves on some bar stools in front of a counter that faced the dance floor. the first set was uneventful except for the fact that they kept having mic problems and stringy bean (the lewd looker) kept going on stage in the middle of their songs to try to figure it out. i thought brody sounded like a calypso singer. sarah and i were both outraged by his round head and round fluff ball hair. sarah lectured evan about it later.

after the set they hung with us for a while. that's when this drunk kid was all over jen and layne stepped in and protected his woman. then they went up to do their second set. sarah and i were getting tired and agreed we wouldn't stay that much longer. that's when drunk kid came back to pester us. he popped up right in front of us on the other side of the counter. we couldn't hear much of what he said except for his swears and the word lame when we communicated that we did not want to dance with him. there was no one dancing and they weren't playing dancing songs and even if we DID dance it would be with each other, not with a drunk twerp. twerp would not leave us alone. he kept sticking his face in front of ours and he grabbed sarah's hands and did dancy dance moves with them against her will. then he came beside me and tried grabbing me from the side--put his arm around me, pulling. i gave him a little shove off of me. that's when his friend came to take him away. but before twerpy left he cupped our faces and said something unintelligable. sarah and i looked at each other and shrugged. it's not like we knew what he said and it's not like we cared. we just cared that he wasn't there touching and twerping us anymore. twerping is a new verb i just made up. i think it's a good one. soon after that we left. it was after 12. on the way to the car we saw a lot of people stumbling around and talking in festive voices. just before we got to the car, a truck full of guys passed us and a guy stuck his head out the window and said to sarah "nice s_ _t slicer!" sarah and i looked at each other mirroring shocked and confused faces to each other. "did he mean my bum?" asks sarah. we thought it was so gross and weird--and proceded to make up different variations of the 'compliment'. however it was kyle who translated it into 'crap carver'. ewww.

a spicy sarah

spice sisters

the next morning when sarah went to work, me and adriel hung out. here he is with the orange peel bowl i made him. that morning he called me "lurfa" then moved to "dura" and back to "laura".

we played, and danced and later we watched dora the explorer. that's where kyle found us--laying on the couch together watching dora and her friends finding mary for the little lamb.

kyle made me a strawberry mango shake.

adriel pooed in his pj-pants and put his tooth into his lip at around the same time. after that he just went commando.

adriel's turn.

laura's turn.

adriel's turn again.

when sarah got home she came bearing gifts of yummy quiznos subs. i wish i had a quiznos sub right now as a matter of fact. anyways we went looking at tvs with evan. adriel loved this bed at the brick because of all the cars.

evan continues to excell at grossness.

we had chinese food for dinner. they had sesame balls which weren't too bad. kyle refused to try one. adriel said he was chinese.

katie was sick and so couldn't come over for sister's movie night which bit the big one. we watched she's the man. i had never seen it and enjoyed it quite a bit. so many funny parts!

sunday morning we went for a little walk and then i had a little photo session of adriel on the back steps.

at church i held elizabeth for the first time. she was in her white baby blessing outfit with a bonnet and was looking super cute.

after church we had a family picnic and elizabeth had a photo shoot of her own.
