madelaine's bird day

dad called me saturday morning to invite me to centennial beach for madelaine's birthday. i came to pick mom up, dad had to go pick up delanie and the kids in his new van, just after 11 and we drove out together. she gave me family news from the island like how martha is looking glamorous and cooking more and how baby elizabeth has red hair and a fiery temper. "but when she's not in pain or mad she's very sweet and happy." said mom, and then paused and laughed. "i guess that's true of all of us."

when we got there we found the far parking lot full of people selling stuff from their trunks. not their bathing suit trunks--car trunks--the boot if you will.--not a boot you wear--the boot of the car! this is useless. anyways mom was excited about it. so we first nabbed a fire pit, leaving the camping chairs there as our claim, and i gobbled down some of my mojos and chicken wings. then we looked around at the junk people were selling and giving away. most people were packing up, meaning better deals for late comers like us. only there was nothing i wanted. mom got some free christmas lights, and light bulbs. she also purchased a copper pot for a dollar.

just as we were going to my car to stash mom's goods, dad called--almost there. so we went back to the fire pit and then walked back to help carry stuff and then i remembered that i left madelaine's card in my car, and so back again. this is not interesting, i just want to share the tediousness of many trips back and forth.

so dad made a fire and the kids played and people roasted wienies. not me. i did not roast a wienie except finishing two off for mary. i was full of mojos and chicken wings. but i did condescend to eat some ketchup chips. hello. please enjoy this picture of dad roasting his especially purchased turkey hot dogs.

so i was just sitting there in the hot sun, burning my face as time would tell, and i was totally bored. so then me and dad and mom started to play greed and caleb joined us. i was having very bad luck and took forever to even get a 1000, which all greed players know, you need to even start playing. this was very boring to me also. meanwhile, mom with every toss had magical luck. this was a tiny bit irksome.

speaking of irksome: at one point caleb was up getting a drink of water. i handed him my cup and asked if he would fill it up too. i turned away to watch dad roll his dice and turned back just in time to see caleb experimenting with physics. the way in which he did this was to take a drink from his cup and promptly spit the water up and catch it with my cup. i naturally objected to this purely on the grounds of grossness and demanded he get me a new cup. around this time dad finished his turn and demanded caleb take his turn. "get me a new cup" demands laura, "caleb it's your turn!" pressures dad. this continued for a while until he finally got me a cup and instead of putting it in my hand, sloppily tosses it so that it flies into, not my hand but the fire pit. at this point i got up and eased my frustrations by some playful aunt to nephew strangulation and got my own cup and water. caleb was flung back towards his seat and then game progressed.

just then delanie fetched me to take a picture of her cute babies on the teeter totter.

josh was on the other end.

after a while we moved out of the sun to a picnic table by the playground. this is when the birdday cake appeared.

isn't madelaine cute in her birthday outfit?

two boyfriends.

noah had free range of the table and the cake leftovers and took full advantage of this freedom.

mary and i went for a swim. the tide wasn't in so the water was at its highest waist level. i told mary we were going to go all the way to the mountain (mount baker) she was up for it. "ok." was her amiable response. we went pretty far out and remained in shallow water. then with mary on my back i became a sea frog and bounded towards the shore with huge leaps and ribbits. later i would turn into a sea slug that sometimes was known to buck.

back at the picnic table, doug was making his baby laugh.

which naturally progresses to bottle time.

josh wanted to go home to play video games.

madelaine wanted to go swimming but had her doubts about the change room.

mary did a dance purely for the camera.

meanwhile dad had a nap under a near by tree.

i took these pictures of douglas when we were pressuring him to go change into his swimming trunks.

mudsy did not escape my notice either.

this is one of my favourite pictures of the day.

around this time mary and gabriel started vying for pictures. right right in front of me. i did my best to comply.

caleb pretended to not be into the lime light...

and i likewise pretended that i was not taking his picture.

he didn't believe me though.

such a handsome boy.

i told mary to go catch a pidgeon.

later when she came back she told me what she discovered about pidgeons. she said that when you stomp your foot, they all fly away.

douglas finally returns.

and shows us his manly side.

so me and dough and douglas, josh (against his will), madelaine, caleb and mary all went for a swim. the tide was in a little more by this time but we still went very far before it got to be chest level. there was a lot of horsing around and yadda yadda.

on the way back, madelaine and i got behind everyone else. we had a nice talk. some of the way she talks reminds me of sarah when she was that age.

noah is so cute i can't cut very many of his pictures. i have to share every one. sorry.

me and the birthday girl.

soon after we got back we decided it was time to leave. but then we decided to go to doug and del's for spaghetti and games.

so we did, and madelaine gave us a fashion show of all her new clothes, which she of course looked super cute in. and we had to play horsies with gabriel. after a yummy supper of spaghetti, where we all realized that we were way hungrier than we supposed, we played an intense round of the animal game and then we went home. the end.
