july 13th--a day of rest

we had no way to tell time. neither of us had watches, my cell phone was dead and i forgot my travel alarm clock. the only thing to do was to get up and out of the tent, get into the car and turn the ignition. so anyways we woke up early and had showers and got ready for church. i felt guilty getting pretty in front of the camping women. camping is when women give themselves permission to let things go and be grungy. everyone talks about the camping woman who primps. am i right? anyways one lady said to me, in a not unkind way "you're pretty fancy for camping." i told her i was going to church and she said that day was the only day they were missing. she said this while gingerly prodding her hot pink face and peering closely at it in the mirror. then she confessed that she had no idea that she burnt herself that badly (it's the trickiness of the oregon coast--it's cool and windy all the time but still bright and sunny. you're not hot but you still burn). then she shrugged and said "at least it kept me warm all night. it's like sleeping in your own oven." and she walked out the door.

we weren't sure where the church was, only that it was in rockaway a little ways up the highway. so we got to rockaway in time for church at nine and started looking. heather asked a man walking his dog if he knew where the mormon church was. "i didn't know there was an lds church here." he said kindly. we were surprised he said 'lds' when we said 'mormon'. he told us about larry's grocery where they had a phone booth. so we went to larry's and although they had a phone booth they had no phone book, so we asked inside and found the church and that it was not too far away at all--nothing could be far away and still be in that town. so we drove to the small chapel and found that we were an hour early. ack.

we went down to the beach. it was a windy (what??!) but beautiful morning so we walked around on the beach for a while and then warmed up in the car and lay back and talked until it was time for church.

it was the neah-kah-nie branch and their chapel was like a super long releif society room full of all kinds of chairs, ranging from soft to hard. we got hard. church was interesting, like it often is in branches. we found out in sunday school, that almost all the people there that day were visitors. we sat next to a woman from vancouver washington. heather took a liking to the sunday school teacher, a robust, cheerful and boney older woman named winnie. i think heather liked the way she said "when somebody smites me, i smite 'em right back!"

after church i had a long nap. i was feeling drugged and thick headed tired. after that heather and i went for a long walk on our beach and explored. it was misty so sometimes we saw our thing and sometimes we didn't.

there's the marine layer that kept blowing off and on shore.

this is the evil look i sometimes give before perpetrating some cabin fever on a poor unsuspecting twin.

there were cool driftwood shelters up and down the beach. some were really big with two rooms and people would sign the logs and date them and stuff. this is a small one that we stopped and spent some time at.

kickin' it in the shelter. yah man.

our front door view. i had this romantic idea that one night i would take my blanket and come down to the beach for a couple of hours under the moonlight (there was a full moon while we were there). but there was too much realistic cold and tiredness on my part for me ever to fulfill the dream.

we just wandered up this path into a forrest for a while and then wandered back.

heather took this pic of the M-O-S-S.

me n' h, by the cross. we think there was some kind of bible camp there.

our beach was a crab graveyard. at first we couldn't figure out why we kept seeing so many crab shells and legs until i put two and two together one morning and figured out that the seagulls in these here parts like to feast on crab. later that day heather and i witnessed one such meal.

it was so windy that the sand was always blowing, obliterating footsteps and causing drifts everwhere. if you stood still it would blow around and behind your heels. you can see a little bit of the sand blowing off of this crab claw.

also, it was squeaky sand! when you walk and your foot skims the sand it totally sounds like fabric rubbing. here heather is doing a turbo squeak-a-thon which made me laugh very much and then i took a bunch of pictures of her doing it, which made me laugh more, as these things tend to go.

stop looking at my bum.

we thought this rock was cool. we were feeling euphoric. if you don't think it's cool, you're not cool, sorry to say.

this big drift wood structure kind of like a boat with the tarp and the pebble "saved" was not far from the cross, so i think it's a bit of a religous kind of saved, not just a sos kind of saved, but you never know, so.

there was a barnacle on a muscle in the sand, there was a barnacle on a muscle in the sand....

see the sand blow?

that thar's the sun m'boy!

girl on beach in oregon in red toque,

girl on beach in oregon without toque=wildness of hair whipping.

that diminutive person in the distance is in fact heather. i thought this shell was pertuns.

can you see the full moon?

we found the warning sign with it's pictures funny.

when we got back i fired up the camp stove and we made ravioli and a tomato sauce. we also discovered heather's pot had a small leak, but the fry pan came in real handy like. we felt like real campers. it was good to eat something hot. i think heather looks cute here. i'm going to put this picture of her up on a lds dating site.

me with my trusty lighter. we put chunks of our extra aged white tilamook cheese in and it melted and was yummy. we heated up water and did dishes. i was the washer and h. was the rinser.
