calgr'y alberty.
ok, i'm finally ready to do an account of my trip to calg'ry.
we left early in the morning. i managed somehow to lug my suitcase, my backpack, my camera case, the cooler, my duvet and peanut pillow down all at once. i felt pretty proud of myself. i felt sorry for banging walls and doors with my considerable added girth of bags and cases. i packed it all in winnifred and realized when i thought of calling heather to tell her i was on my way that i forgot my cell phone. so much for my one trip down victory. after snatching my cell phone up, i turned and saw my purse hanging on the door knob to my room. close call. it was then that i saw the coon hat and the coon hat spoke to me. "i'm your road trip hat" it said. so i put it on and tromped down the stairs out the door and on to the calg'ry road trip.
heather, the scribe in the travel log, wrote this:
no we didn't take rothko all the way to alberty with us. we dropped him off at his aunty sarita's for the weekend. heather kept turning and encouraging him with "mimi!" he ignored with cold accusing blue eyes. back to her account:
heather gave us big cookies to eat for breakfast.
we stopped just before the toll plaza to go pee. the week before mom and i had laughed about this sign about the falling ice but i guess if you are speared by a icicle dagger it's not that funny to you. the pleasing thing about this bathroom was the warm water in the taps. two thumbs up.
the mountains of the coquihalla were salt and pepper with the reddish brown trees claimed by the pine beetle. it made us sad. what made us happy was that the sun came out.
we were pretty quiet travelers that morning.
we stopped to eat in salmon arm. we made our sandwiches on yummy fresh sourdough bread with pepper-lime hummus (not my favourite but it was ok), hungarian salami and aged white cheddar cheese. i added doritos in mine for a satisfying crunch. we just sat in the car with all the sandwich makings spread out all over our legs. sarah pointed out picnic tables nearby. "don't be silly." i said.
sicamous was our next stop. sarah pointed out d dutch dairy and said they had really good ice cream so we stopped. the ice cream parlour smelled a bit like cows which turned heather off. she didn't get anything and went to wait outside. i unfortunately was undeterred. i got chocolate peanut butter mousse and english toffee. it was ok. i think the girl who served me might have been offended by my hat but it was hard to say. when i went outside i found heather in the barn. there was a petting zoo type thing there too. but heather was in the barn with the baby cows and the kittens. the kittens were super cute. heather got slimed by a 'friendly' calf.
we drove through a big cloud of yellow dust caused by a small rockslide. thankfully there was a big cement wall to protect the road.
the mountains were beautiful and breathtaking as one would expect. we stopped to take pics at certain locations, like the alberta sign.
we also got stopped three times not far from kicking horse pass, i think.
i actually took this upside down. i was trying to balance pinklett on a rock and she'd only do it upside down.
we saw a black bear on the side of the road, and two magnificent elk. they are soo beautiful.
we stopped in the bow valley and used some yucky outhouses. heather used grass and spit to wash her hands after i told her andrea's thing about the enzymes in your spit.
we got to calagary and found karey's place without much difficulty. when we were parking karey poked her head out the window. she squinted at me. "what are you wearing on your head?" "it's my road trip hat." i told her.
heather and i thought we were walking into a hotel. that's the poshness of karey's digs. "everyone says that." said karey. she met us in the hall and took our pics. her place was even more impressive inside.
we went to pete's drive in. we had to drive through the stix to get there. at least we thought it was the sticks because the a&w had grass a foot high in front. pete's has a very complex drive through system. you can go on either side and the paths loop around each other. a lady and man openly stared at my hat. and why shouldn't they. it's a very handsome coon hat. :) we were so hungry. karey and heather shared a mango shake. i got a rootbeer one. i was torn between rootbeer and licorice. i thought of mixing them but heather and karey thought that would be gross. probably right.
so they didn't give us enough straws, since karey brought her own glass mug for her shake. so we stopped at a seven eleven and i had to go in and get a straw. i was supposed to be inconspicuous. "nice hat." said the lady to me right away. "thanks", i said grabbing the first straw that i saw and taking off.
karey didn't like her straw. it was really skinny pop straw instead of a slurpy straw. we all found this quite funny for some reason that could have been our tiredness and our giddiness at being together. we went to a park to chow down.
karey and her straw.
i don't remember much more about that night. i remember that their apartment is really really warm. warm like fatima's. warm like a lot of old people live there. warm like open that window really wide and turn on the fan full tilt. heather slept on karey's bed. i slept on the airmatress on the floor. karey slept out in the living room with vicki who's sister and brother in law were sleeping over that night too.
i woke up many times that night with a completely dry mouth. like so dry that my tongue felt like that dry cracked earth in the desert. it took work to gather up some saliva to splash around my parched mouth. also my uvula was swollen and my throat hurt. heather's throat hurt too and we thought we must have been snoring up a storm.
karey was already at work. we took our time getting ready and i found this book. i thought it was vicki's but it was karey's. while i was there i called it 'my book.' it was 100 places to visit in canada. and it became my down time passion while i was there.
when i finally did have a shower in karey's bathroom (vicki has her own en suite bathroom because that's what kind of place it is) i walked into her shower, which is very nice--it is extended (but no tub) and has benches to sit in and a good shower head, and i found that there must be more than two people living there because of the sheer amount of product in there. karey was a little sheepish about it later on. "one half of it is vicki's", she defended.
heather and i caught the bus with karey's directions folded safely in my purse. we were excited to be exploring the city AND having a transit adventure at the same time. i was nervous about the bus specifics. "what do they DO here?" i wondered to heather. like do they have machines, will it be like vancouver or totally different?? "i don't know!!" wailed heather. ok it wasn't that dramatic. and i needn't have worried. it was totally old school. paper transfer and everything.
when we got on the train i dropped my cell phone out of my purse and the guy across from us handed it to me. he seemed a bit crazy. he was laughing to himself over something he was listening to on his phone.
it wasn't long before we were downtown calg'ry. we got there a lot faster than karey anticipated so we had some time before meeting her for lunch. this is when heather and i practiced walking leisurely. "i'm not walking fast. i'm on vacation." was our motto. it was fun. we found this art gallery and went in to look at the paintings. a lady glared at us. we ignored her. i pointed to a picture and said "that's neat." "the colours distress me." said heather. haha. they were quite garish.
for lunch we went to steven ave. it's a cool pedestrian only street with shops and vendors and so on. rhea works near karey and met us for lunch too. we had donairs. good good good. we were hoping that they would be handing out free cow boy hats like the day before, but sadly they weren't.
karey bought a pink cowboy hat and it suits her. and it suits her city. and her province.
i ate a reisen at karey's office and thought of elicia. i took two. in her office is a stuffed wolverine or something. or it could be a marmott. and it's beside some antlers. we took pictures with it because we're tourists.
so heather and i went back to steven ave to shop around. there was this cool place with hippy purses made out of records and leather bound journals and photo albums for pretty cheap. i bought some jewelry. a torquoise necklace and a funky bracelet. we took some pics like this one
of the yodeling sausage. we didn't eat here but i liked the sign. just the audacity of calling your establishment the yodeling sausage, nevermind 'the best of the wurst'. impresses me.
then heather and i discovered a place of artists and their studios and we explored that. it was pretty cool but me feet were quite sore by that point. there was coi fish in a pond there. they stunk but i thought it was heather. heather bought the cutest little glass polar bear. he's supposed to be for resting your rings on, but heather got him for his pure cuteness and doesn't plan on resting any rings on him at all.
a calagary tower and artistic structure of some sort.
we finally hobbled to the river. my feet were super sore then. i just lay in the grass.
we were together yet apart.
i notice things like sewer covers and our feet witness it.
karey was waiting for us when we painfully made our way back. she was in her pink cowboy hat. you see what i mean. and what i mean is she's rad.
the trains were pretty crowded but i managed to nab a seat and soon karey could sit down too. there was a guy across from me who missed his stop. all of a sudden as we were pulling away from somewhere he just looked up and began swearing over and over. (you can see him in karey's glasses. he's the one in the blue shirt). he was looking right at me like he wanted me to talk to him about it so i showed some sympathy. he kept intermittently bursting out with swears though. apparently it wasn't the first time he'd missed his stop. karey and i found it a little amusing.
when we got home we rested while watching 3's company and facts of life. i fell asleep for a little bit but only a bit then it was time to go to rhea's for dinner.
rhea lives in a family town house like area. it's pretty nice inside. kenzo was cute. he wore her high heels around, taking pleasure in the loud clack clack they made on the wood floor. rhea prepared a mountain of food. we had a nice visit and then we left. we met paul coming home when we stepped outside. they seem happy there.
we decided to go back home before going to the conference and we didn't make it there what with stopping for cookies until after they had played all their getting to know you games. when we got there it was just a gym full of people. we found niki and edith and saw pat hardie and talked for a bit and then left.
next morning karey made us the yummiest thick shakes for breakfast. then we lugged our tired selves to the conference and workshops. the first one we went to was put on by a woman dr, who had been in uganda. itwas a slide show. interesting. then we all stayed in that room for one about goals. it was pretty good but it was so hot and it was hard for me to keep my attention, which is saying a lot. we met a girl who was nice. friendly like. then we split. karey and i went to the photo editing class and vicki and heather went to one about cars. the photo editing one was really good. karey thought our teacher was hot. and i remember thinking 'our teacher is totally karey's type'. we learned some good things and about some free programs. i've been trying them out. some aren't as good as i thought and some others are not very user friendly. but still useful.
then we had lunch. it was pizza and they called you by your birthday month. they started with january and then december and so on. karey and i figured that we were both going to be called at around the same time, so we went together when they called april/september. "your birthday's practically in septemeber anyways." i rationalized to her.
vicki and pat and heather were late. pat always seemed to be either with vicki or looking for vicki. we picked up on this and highlighted it as much as possible.
after lunch was service projects. we sucked in that we did not serve anyone. we went to the zoo with edith. we had two for one tickets so it was only nine dollars and it was fun. it was fun to do something calgaryish and to hang out with edith and to have some down time from the conference. we stopped back at the posh apartment first to drop vicki off. edith asked me if i still did my hair the same way with the conditioner and so on. i said i did and then she said she thought of me every time she washed her hair. i was all "you do?" and we laughed about it. "that must mean you think about her every day." said karey.
karey took most of the zoo pictures because her camera was out of juice and i wasn't into zoo pics, although i did enjoy editing them.
giraffes kissing. i also saw one stick his black tongue right up into his own nostril. talented.
karey and the zebra's bum.
moi. i got chocolate all over that shirt.
there was so much steam in this building. i almost died. i had sweat trickling in rivers down my back.
this guy is a spoonbill. his name is humphrey.
on the way back from the zoo i successfully got some sun on my pale white arm, so it's not as drastic from my redish brown left arm. back at church we had dinner. i was worried they were going to move us around and seperate us like they had the year before, but luckily they didn't. i hate stuff like that. they served us family style, with a platter of each dish at each table. we liked that.
after dinner was speed dating. at first i was like "i don't want to do that." but then i realized we'd all be sitting next to each other and it wouldn't be a big deal. so i did it. i sat in between karey and eedie. it was pretty fun, and sometimes pretty funny. we all had horse voices by the end from yelling over the noice things like "i'm from vancouver!" karey told one guy that he had nice eyes "are you coming on to me?" he asked. it lasted too long though.
heather wasn't feeling up to snuff so vicki drove her home and this caused pat some stress. me and karey came out and bugged him about his vicki attachment. we said his nike runpod thing on his shoe was a vicki homing chip. "you know more about where she is than we do." we pointed out. we talked with pat and hung out and when vicki came back we all played rook. didn't end up dancing at all, which was ok, allthough a little anti-social. but we had fun.
next day church was at the university. we sat in the lecture hall in seats with flap desks. i actaully really liked the talks and the lessons. vicki and i started up an 'um' count when this one girl was teaching. we started late but still counted 41 times!
back at posh house vicki made me and her each an awesome omlette and karey made her and heather each fried egg sandwiches with bacon. heather napped and i settled down to read 'my book.' just then the landlords came and vicki and karye went through painfully long negtiations with them on the re-signing of their lease. i found vicki's negotiation skill quite impressive. it took an hour and a half and vicki and karey had to leave the room a number of times to discuss things. i thought they went to the bedroom, but no, they went into the bathroom. meanwhile i was on the couch trying to mind my own business. their landlords talked to each other in farsi, i think, and i kept reading. i mangaged to finish the book this way
then we played marbles. it's a hutterite game that's kind of like parcheesies but with cards and as a teams. i liked it a lot.
then we had a roast dinner with roasted sweet potato chunks and broccoli and zuchinni. it was yumYUM. we were going to go for a walk, but we just ended up talking and lounging the rest of the evening.
and that's enough for today, innit?

"we are both sleepy and didn't get much sleep. i feel nauseous. itchy! rothko quieted down nicely and is giving his mummy the cold shoulder."
no we didn't take rothko all the way to alberty with us. we dropped him off at his aunty sarita's for the weekend. heather kept turning and encouraging him with "mimi!" he ignored with cold accusing blue eyes. back to her account:
"the weather is cool and gray. what a SURPRISE.we then picked up sarah b., trekked to langley dropped of the apple of heather's eye at sarita's and made our way to the highway after some brief wrong turns and a speedy passing of the temple site.
laura is wearing a slightly creepy raccoon hat for some purpose known only to herself. see her blog for details and photos."
heather gave us big cookies to eat for breakfast.
