when all your dreams come true

fatma gave me a christmas present yesterday. she gave me a DIGITAL CAMERA! can you believe it? i can't believe it. this is how all my dreams came true.

after all my hopes and dreams were fulfilled by bud-oh-my-bud, and my digital camera was getting a fill up of 'juice' if you will, fatima and i left for our friday night adventure. we had planned to go see happy feet at the imax because as i have been pointing out a lot in our recent past, i have free imax tickets. on the way there we decided to eat at earls. i like earls. i like how earls has a number of tasty dishes. at the mention of the earls caesar salad, fatima was game. so we nabbed a parking spot across the street from earls and fatima put thirty cents into the meter and as we walked to earls, already our plans were changing. fatima had pointed out a tea shop she was excited about, and i said "you know we don't HAVE to go to the imax. like if dinner goes too long... and we could shop around here..." "yeah," says fatima, "because we can go to the imax any time..." so earls was 'hopping' and there was a 25 minute wait. i asked fatima if she wanted to wait. "no." she said. so we walked out and started looking for another place. there was a thai place across the road. we walked over there and it looked too pish posh for us. i should interrupt and say that i was not wearing a coat. i had decided a coat might be a burden in the theatre. so then we saw an indian place. again, too rich for our blood. that's when fatima got it in her head to go to martini's. "i think it's a little ways down," she mused. so we began what became a looooooong trek. we ended up walking from broadway and granville past macdonald and broadway. and as fate would have it martini's never materialized. (that's because, as i found out later, it was in the opposite direction around main street). it began to rain. we finally, in exhaution settled on a little greek place in kits called akbar. fatima liked the decor. "it's like we're sitting outside!" she said in childlike wonder. and it was. the ceiling was painted like a blue sky with fluffy clouds and the walls were painted a light yellow and had shuttered windows with geranium flower boxes. our waiter was a leaner and a nudger. fatima thought he was a tad bit creepola, but i liked him for the sole but significant reason that he "kept me hydrated." (his words). we got hummus and pita. can i just say that i love hummus soooooooooo much? i do. i love it. what could be better than hummus? i mean really, what is there? this hummus was delicious. i swear that it had roasted garlic in it. and the pita was fresh and soft and warm. i wonder if it was homemade. i wouldn't be surprised. fatima got lamb, moussaka, and this stuffed eggplant thing. man oh man can that girl put it away! i got the zorba. lamb and tomatoes and tzitziki wrapped in a pita. yumm! we both really enjoyed akbar despite the ordeal we went through to get there.

the real ordeal was walking back. it was raining hard by this time. and the rain was driving right in our faces. well fatima had her cute little parka hood on, but i was without. i was clad in a thin but pretty top (new) and an open sweater. we talked on the way like it was a sunny day and we were on a leisurely walk. (and fatima i was listening to every word). but in reality the rain was very cold. and my cheeks were frozen, making it hard to talk clearly. plus i had to go pee real bad. fatima believed we would never get back. i was of the opinion that the car was just over the next rise in the road. it's always this way with us. i think we don't have enough time, fatima knows we have plenty. i'm optimistic about reaching the car, she's pessimistic. we're ying and yang basically.

eventually we did make it back and fatima's head steamed up the window. we drove back to my place and fatima went straight to her car. when i hugged her goodbye i said "thanks for making all my dreams come true." and i heard a muffled laugh "well that was easy."

elicia and her mom and sister elena were upstairs in the apartment when i got home. i told them about our rainy friday night adventure. and then i showed elicia my new dream machine--the digital camera. and elena mentioned that she got one recently too and that scott got her a tripod with it.

later that night archie settled down, soft and silky between my feet. i was laying in bed reading my camera book. and i picked up my new best friend, the digital camera and the pic a day was born again with this picture of archie-my-boy. notice the way my arches frame his head.

i woke up on saturday morning with one thing in mind. picture taking. and i got a stool and pulled out the three tripods i have up in my closet, that karen gave to me a couple of years ago. sure enough one of them fit onto my camera! so i have a tripod to use too. i can be just like elena! this excited me more than you know.

in my camera book i read to my surprise and delight that my camera, who shall be named lil' fats, has a setting where you can manipulate the shutter speed and take long exposures. well i've
wanted to try taking long exposure pictures every since the stake talent night and i saw the cool pictures that john elton took. so i started doing it. but it was too bright in my room. so i went out into the living room and took some pictures using the tripod (because the longer the exposure the more sensitive to shaking). i took a pic of archie bunker who was transfixed by the tripod. and one of izzy under the laundry drying rack, which i'm not including at this time. but my favourite shot of the day (and there were MANY) i think was the one i took of helen and elena while they were eating breakfast and talking. they didn't know i was taking it and i did a super long exposure so they were moving and talking and eating and the whole time archie is laying on the air matress still as a mouse, watching me. it's my pic of the day for january 20th 2007.

later heather and i went on a run and i brought lil fats along with me. we ran to the park down by the river, which we like to do on saturdays. once we stopped running and began walking i began talking pictures. heather, to her credit was very patient. these pictures are only the highlights of the billions i took. you'll have to bear with me, my dreams just came true, you know.

first i played with the macro and super macro functions on the brambles.

i liked the brambles because they are just so wintery to me.

our river park is across from the airport.

heather wandering the boardwalk while i click the pics.

heather liked this clump of grass. she requested this pic and i like it too.

one of the things we enjoyed the most about the day was the blue sky, after so many days of dark and cloudy.

that's us. that's the way we are.

and in the woods on the way back i captured this little white berry and the rain drops. i like it.

the rest of my day was so full. heather and i did some shopping for elicia's cake, and her present and some salad for heather to take to a party at rhea's and i found the prettiest jade pendant for half price at this store that's closing down. i love the jade, because it's all light and goes down darker. like that jade katie and i saw in that shop before christmas. heather says the more you wear jade the darker it gets. interesting. then i made fresh salsa, forgot about the lime and salt, that i didn't have, went ot safeway AGAIN and picked some up, bought some gas because miracles of miracles, it was below a dollar, went home took a long exposure of me eating my fresh salsa on top of cottage cheese on top of a ryvita cracker, cleaned the kitchen and cleaned my bedroom, in a way that it's never been cleaned before, ie unpacked. and i finally went to bed at one. archie was already in bed. he had been sitting on my hopechest looking at me with weary eyes until i opened a flap of the duvet for him at the foot of my bed and he settled in and fell asleep. and that was my day and and that was how my dreams came true and i really really really have to go get ready for church!
