the low lands, the flat lands, the prarie grasslands

my first impression of raymond is that it is soooooooooo quiet. like there is no noise! on our first morning here, i sat on the front steps and i didn't see anyone or hear anything but crickets and a plastic bag rustle. it wasn't until afternoon that i saw another living human being besides karey and her neices. the person i saw was was a man in a red shirt coming through the yellow fields in front of the house. he passed silently.

i know i'm a real snob about bc. there's no place better in the world in my eyes. why would you live anywhere else when you can live in bc, but i'll be fair. the prairies have their own beauty. the bright yellow fields againts the big blue sky. the big openness. the beauty of a straight road (not that windy roads don't have a lovliness, because of course they do), the calm and the quiet, the sweet smell of hay (kind of reminds me of my tatami mat floor in japan).

i feel lonely in all this big, in all this quiet.

karey and i took the girls for a walk yesterday. most that passed us (mostly in pick up trucks) gave us a little stare. we passed the raymond stake centre which is HUGE. it's two story and it's very long. karey says it has the biggest gym ever. the roads are super wide like in utah and a lot of the homes remind me of walking around in a utah community. in the school field there was already a football practice going on. karey told me that football and basketball are really big in raymond. the whole town goes crazy for it. "this feels more like the states than canada." i told her. she agreed. the raymond american drawl doesn't help matters. to give them credit the canada day parade gives raymond what fame it has, and apparently everyone sticks out their canadian flags on canada day. but all this patriotism isn't that typical of most canadians if you know what i mean. it's kind of american.

last night we drove over to mcgrath with kris to pick up the waterton park pass from her friend kendle. karey told kendle that we had been roommates for over seven years. "oh?!" said kendle, "i guess it won't be long before you're out here too then?" "no." i said. "not likely." i think i was a bit too blunt. i should tell myself "don't be blunt with strangers" over and over. the coolest thing at kendle's was that they had a big salt water tank with a big anenome with clown fish playing in it, crabs walking around in shells, a shrimp, a barnicle and other cool salt water things. i want a salt water tank. i do. i do.

today we went to waterton with the neices. it was so beautiful and so nice to be amongst the mountains again. maybe next year we'll go camping there.
