farewell to karey

just had a long nap with my handsome boy. i dozed off after i finished pappa's wife, a book i loved when i was young, but i wouldn't have slept so long if he hadn't stretched out with me. he's so soft and furry and endearing the way he curls around me. at first he curls up on my chest right under my chin. then he starts to groom and when he's done he gives my nose a few licks and plops himself down full length. he's getting so long. i loves him.

last night was karey's going away potluck at stanley park. karey and i took adlebuns with us to safeway so i could pick up some mojos and she could pick up some pop. he was being really good but started to get grumpy in the check out line. we told him to save it and he did. in the car ride to stanley park he fell asleep. karey and i felt pretty proud of ourselves because we approached 2nd beach from the english bay side and it was a lot faster. we felt like we may have been the first people ever to think of that. once there karey was waiting for some people to pull out of a spot and suggested that i go buy a ticket while we were waiting. i was happy to comply, but just when it was my turn a girl with a ticket good until nine asked me if i wanted it for two bucks. this was a good deal because it would have cost us six bucks to pay until nine, so i gladly took it. we unpacked the car and there was just so much stuff but luckily we piled most of it onto adlebuns' sleeping carriage. "boy," we said to ourselves, "when you have a child there is so much to carry". and we laughed because we had been pretending that adlebuns was our own baby. earlier in the day when we tried to go for fish and chipsh, and were foiled again, (!) adlebuns needed refreshment before we continued on. so sarah sat on the bench by the most unaccomadating fish and chipsh place ever and kyle and i went to go examine the scottish cultural centre. kyle said he was getting back to his roots. "what roots?!" i scoffed. he defended himself saying his dad was scottish. "ya but what about the other side of your family?" i objected, knowing full well it wasn't scottish. "what about your family?!" he shot back. "we're all scottish/english/irish" i said proudly. "it's all my roots." so we had the root war back and forth. i said he only had one scottish root to speak of and a weak one at that. he said his scottish roots were more recent and so more important. fiddlesticks. anyways the cultural hall was not that exciting. there was a big hall downstairs where someone was getting ready for a wedding reception and upstairs was a small dance studio where people must learn highland dancing. i told kyle that if they never came back for adlebuns and i had to keep him, that i would send him to highland dancing class.

anyways i digress. so at first it was just karey and the baby and me at the going away party, but it wasn't long before scott, then randy, then heather, sarita and elicia, and vicky and chandra, then christine, and fox and amy, and then joana, and joy and gab all arrived. it was fun and there was a lot of good food. scott made his promised yummy blackberry peach crisp. me and kyle and randy and vicky played rook. it was the longest game ever but in the end they won. then we played elephant soccer. that was hilarious. karey had taken two toilet paper rolls (without the paper) and made a type of 'glasses' out of them with elastic bands. when you put it on, you were looking out one roll for each eye and had elastic bands around your ears to keep them on. of course you look ridiculous and you can't see very well either, but that's what makes it so fun to play with. sarah and i were on opposite teams and i positioned myself as usual in the defence position. sarah and i had a lot of fun checking and blocking each other. one time she kept trying to kick the ball past me and kept blasting it right into my legs. everyone was done before sarah and i had had our fill. wussies.

not long after that the sun was setting and we decided to go so that kyle could visit whole foods before i dropped them off at the ferry. and we might have had time to do it, but i got lost getting out of the park. i was trying to find the exit that takes you right onto the road going to the bridge, but i ended up going around in circles. we passed the same road kill and the same tinny sounds of music coming from malkin bowl three times before we gave up and took the georgia street exit that sent us out of the park going the wrong way. i had to do a turnaround on denman. whole foods was forgotten and we were just trying to get to the ferry on time, which we did, tack och lov as they say in sweden.
