connecting on the coast I

i was going to give a play by play of the conference, but i lost my desire to do it. it's too hard to explain how it all was. maybe i'll just start and cover a few things...

i hung out with lisa m. and una (who i like to call uma or luna or youna at times) most of the time. on wednesday when we arrived i could tell people had already been drinking. we went to our rooms after checking in and getting our conference packetts. we had almost all the rooms in the hotel and i think on my floor it was all us. i liked the rooms. they were nice and i especially liked all the storage--a closet with hangers and there were four big drawers under the tv. i unpacked everything and put it away. i don't like living right out of a suitcase. then i changed out of my roast and toast t-shirt and my too low of a rise faded jeans, into some other less raggedy jeans and a button up shirt, fixed up my two low buns that were coming out and frizzing out and freshened up my make-up. all this time i was watching ope on tv. it was about cheating spouses. it was interesting. i liked some things they brought out like: you can love people and still say the truth about them. this guy was a hard time saying how he was wounded himself (he had wounded his wife and family) but finally he just blurted it out that he loved his dad but that his dad didn't listen and so on. and then there was a woman on who was telling her story of 'the other woman' and she said that he told her that she was beautiful and sexy and yadda yadda. dr. robin said that he was telling her things that she didn't believe about herself. she said it's very easy to take advantage of women who are needy and desperate, and that we women need to make ourselves whole and strong. she said that the proposition by a married man is actually an insult and that's the way people should look at it. i liked dr. robin that day.

anyway after we were ready me and lisa and una went downstairs because we were all supposed to meet for dinner. we found our group lounging about the bar and joined them. people from other clubhouses kept coming by and saying hello. everybody knows everybody in the clubhouse world it seems.

we ate at the restaurant at the dorcester which is quite pricey. i got the three course meal because the dessert sold me on the whole thing. i had an artsy salad of mixed greens. i almost spilled dressing on myself but i was saved by my name tag which dangled in it's plastic cover hung around my neck. it caught the raspberry vinigrette. i pretended to scrape it back on to my plate to make lisa laugh. it was a tricky salad to eat because it was full of long thin pieces of things and unwieldly leaves of different sorts. but i managed by being very careful and eating one bit at a time. no spearing piles of salad. our waiter was named rod and he called all the women darling and the men by their number on his seating chart. "you're only 22 to me" he would say. meanwhile to me he would say over my shoulder as he planted my artic char in front of me he'd say "see i didn't forget about you darling." "thanks rod." i'd reply. rod almost forgot my dessert though. it was carmalized banana creme brule. but it eventually came and we made short work of it. lisa m. is diabetic and loves sweet things. she tells me of when she lived in england and used to chrystalize sugar with a lighter over her muffins and stuff.

right after dinner was the wine and cheese in the 'opra room'. we mingled a little bit and met a few people from other clubhouses. some people drank a lot. when the wine and cheese was mostly done we went for a walk down by the water. i was so hot because the opera room proved to be sauna like. they all thought nanaimo was very beautiful. it was pretty and the sun was setting but that was just the tip of the iceburg when it comes to nanaimo in my eyes. i rolled my pants up and waded in the water a bit while we talked. lisa needed more smokes and so did wendel (whom i like to call vendela) we walked over to scummy harbour park mall where there's a thrifty's. i bought real fruit gummies and some toothpaste. when we got back we went up to room 222 which was the party room. there was more drinking and talking and laughing etc. i don't remember much but we left around 11 and got made fun of because everybody traditionally drinks and parties the nights away at conferences. but comeon breakfast was at 7:45 in the morning!
