the first day of her 31st year II

we woke up early on saturday morning. but there's early and there's early. heather was earliest. she got up at 8:30 to be ready by 9 because no one told her that we decided to leave for harrison at 10 instead of 9. oops, sorry heather. not my fault is all i'm going to say. i woke up around 9ish and spent some time wrapping elicia's birthday present. we wanted to get her a new set of scriptures. she only had the seminary types and we thought she deserves a nice pair, so we pooled our money and converted it to american. we decided to let her pick out what kind she wanted herself. to represent her present, i wrapped my own blue quad and put the money inside the front cover. karey and i had a disagreement over when to present the present. i thought we should give it to her in the morning before we left and karey thought we should give it to her later when we had the cake. we were both had a case of early morning crustiness and when karey said "fine, then you go find it and you go do it." i replyed in my dumbo voice (not dumbo the elephant, just a low dummie voice) "ya, ok i'll do it all by myself." the matter seemed decided. heather wisely stayed out of cross fire. in the end we didn't leave the house until quarter to eleven or something and the pace on the road outta town was crawling. after about five ten minutes i realized that i forgot my purse, so we turned around enabling me to fetch karey's headband and elicia's goat milk moisturizer at the same time. the second time we left the house it was 11 and i took a different route. the pace was thankfully better.

we all took turns to pick the cd on the way there and sang along and talked and whatnot. we took my car and elicia got the front seat because it was her birthday. sarita had called shot gun before this but gave up the seat gracefully. however sarita had to bring her own pillows to be happy and one of these was a body pillow. they ended up sitting on the body pillow which helped to solve the tender-tail-boned heather who had to sit in the middle due to her shortness of leg, and sarita held the other pillow on her lap. sarita was sitting behind elicia who had moved her seat so far up as to allow minimal movement for her legs, but then couldn't be bothered to let it back a few notches. meanwhile sarita who's clausterphobic needed the window open a crack. on my side karey was having a great dislike of the foggy windows in the back and asked me to roll down my window. i said "no." "please!" she said. "it's foggy." "i don't want to be rained on." i explained. "you barely have to open it, you won't get rained on." she promised, so i did and everyone was comparatively happy.

we stopped in abbotsford for gas where it was ten cents cheaper. this was the place to buy the road trip junk food. do a linda if you will. we laughed and remembered linda buying all the twinkies and ding-dongs on that trip we took to cold stone creamery that one time. "what?! it's a road trip!" she'd say. i got my chocolate mini eggs and little bag of doritos and other sundry items along with a bottle of raspberry flavoured water. as i was going to the line up sarita points at my water and says why don't i get it at the grocery store. i just looked at her uncompehendingly. it's not like there was a grocery store nearby. then she stopped me again and let me know that that flavoured water was gross. "i like it!" i said exasperated and amused. "is there anything else of mine that you'd like to look at?" she laughed and let me by.

as we neared harrison we were all getting excited. apparently harrison is located in 'sasquatch counry'. there's many a sigh, mural and statue along the way to tell you this. we promised oruselves that we would stop and take pictures with the sasquatch later. first we found our motel which wasn't far from anything (although nothing in harrison is). from the price we thought it was going to be a dump. but when we climbed the stairs to number 8 we were pleasently surprised. it was a really spacious room with two double beds, and a hide-a-bed (ie. haida bed) lots of light and a fairly big bathroom. it even had a kitchenette! we oohed and ahhed and were pleasantly surprised for a few moments. then we decided to go buy some groceries for lunch and breakfast the next day. the motel lady told us the nearest grocery store was in aggezi so we jumped back in the car in high spirits. we stopped by many a sasquatch statue, mural and sign to take pictures. sarita refused to be in any of them but she took all the pictures. one time i saw a dark figure ahead with a bicycle. it didn't look human. "look!" i shouted. "a sasquatch with a bicycle!" it really looked like one, but as we got closer it turned out to be a woman hunched up in her coat. we all burst out laughing. poor sasquatch lady.

at the super value we could tell they knew we were outta towners. one cute stock boy said hi to us every time we passed by. and in the bakery as i was picking otu a soft and yummy cheese loaf the backery lady said a cheery welcoming kind of hello. like an implied "hello outta towners!". sarita bought a whole flat of butter tarts and a huge jar of mustard. "i'm taking it home." she said proudly like she just found a stray pet. our ongoing joke of not having enough mustard was born that very moment. back at the motel we watched betsy's wedding while we chomped down on our meat and cheese sandwiches on the soft cheese bread. some had chips and some had carrots. i had some of both. i favour a balanced approach.

before betsy's wedding was over we slipped our suits on under our cloths and headed otu for adventure. heather stayed behind because her aunt flo don't smoke. she had her own adventures on the shores of harrison lake. meanwhile we slipped through the doors of harrison hot springs resort to sample their springs. we figured they might be nicer than those in the public pool. karey and elicia were the weak links, worried we'd be caught. sarita was the perpetration leader. we were smooth. we looked in the gift shop and then walked down the hall following the signs to the hot springs. we just had to go through a pair of glass doors. the hot springs were before us, but when we went to open the door it was locked. "you need your key to get in." said a guy standing there. "we forgot ours" said elicia. and the guy opened it for us with his key! apparently he was totally drunk. i wasn't near him and didn't notice. i was looking through the doors at the happy soaking people. so we walked in in our street clothes and with our backpacks. everyone else had white robes and towels and were in their suits. we shed our outers in a discrete corner and waded in. elicia was especially worried that we were going to be caught. i kept telling her that once we were in the water nobody could tell any different. "i know, i know" she'd say "i just worry that someone will come and say you're going to have to leave the pool." haha. after a little while in the grown up pool (this is outside by the way) i felt like exploring. karey agreed to come with me because i convinced her there was a hotter pool that i might have seen. but it turned out that i didn't. it was a almost cool pool that you could swim in and then the big kids pool. but i DID find the quiet pools. they were inside this round building. one was really hot. we sat there for a while and then i discovered the changeroomm which was a good find since we had no robes to leave in. after a while we went back outside and joined sarita and elicia. elicia was talking about her montessory (sp) plans. when she came up for air we told them about our finds. then sarita and i left to go swim in the cool pool. it was nice. i don't like being hot for too long. i like contrasting the hot and the cold. that's what i like i tell you. when we came back karey's face looked purple. we decided to leave a little while after that. i was sooooooooooo hot. as we walked back towards our modest motel i directed us towards the beach. i saw a floating pier and so we walked to the end of it and i put my feet in the icy water. it felt niiice.

after the dock on the bay we decided to check out the tiny strip mall, titled "harrison mall". at the last store we hit the jack pot. lots of beautiful semi precious stone pieces. i bought a small mother of pearl pendant. it only cost 12 bucks. i saw some really beautiful amber though. but i couldnt' afford it. we were reunited with heather at the store, where elica bought a green something or other pendant (it's that green with burgandy marblish one that you like bethknee) and sarita bought a cool blue one with a white swirl that i just happened to find, plus she bought a stainless steel bracelet.

back at the motel i was the only one to put on lip gloss and mascara. apparently everyone else was proud of their no make-up status. to each their own, i say. we went to the settler's pub for supper. a large comfy log building with different sports events on different tvs throughout. almost as soon as we were within the doors, a guy came purposely towards us. i wondered if he worked there and if he was coming to seat us. but it was soon apparent that he was drunk as a skunk. "do you know the dunns?" he asked. "do you, do you do you do you" he asked down the line of us. we all assured him that we did not know any dunns. then he asked for a group hug. uhh no. we said. that was when his friend came to collect him and appologize.

they had good eats there. i had the chicken quesadilla. we all had chicken of some sort. chicken lovers said the waitress. i got a hot chocolate when i saw heather's. it came in a glass cup with whip cream and a cherry on top. heather got cold on her beach adventures. sitting on a rock and such. we had a nice relaxed time. just before we left the vancouver/montreal game came on. vancouver scored three goals right away and karey was tempted to stay but we left.

we left for our night of beauty that is. back at the motel we had masques, and scrubs and polishes and parifin wax treatmetns and soaks and more. we watched win a date with tad hamilton while we beautified. and gave elicia her present and she loved it. at first she thought the scrips were hers, but we kept saying wait, wait and then she saw that they were mine. we had angel food cake with cool whip and strawberries and by the time we lay down our heads we were fairly glowing beauties. how could we not be.

speaking of laying down our heads, my pillow was thin and the rooom was so hot. i ketp tossing and turning and trying to focus on breathing through my nose in order to limit the snoring. it didn't help that i pridefully rejected sarita's proffered earplugs (everyone else took them) "i'm a heavy sleeper." i said. and i am. but the pillow, the heat... i was awake and sarita was letting out regular snoring utterances. somehow, sometime i slept and i woke in the morning under a sheet and karey had the blanket. by that time i was cold.

we ate, we cleaned up and we came home. it was my turn to pick a cd just as we neared home. ah well. i enjoyed everyone else's.

and that's our story as i tell it.
