not a sewer day but a power day
so i got back to work from grocery shopping and found that there had been a power outage. everything happens when i'm gone grocery shopping! on sewer day i was gone shopping and came back to a closed work place. only lisa and dave were there. anyways the bosses hummed and hawed for a while and fiannally made the ultimate decision to close down for the day. i knew they would. yay! so we have a power day today. i came home and read the paper for a while. then i decided to make some edam grilled cheese sandwiches and i burnt them. i have a real burning problem lately. i'm just not used to the burners on this stove. they heat up so quickly and are super hot even at a supposedly medium heat level. so what could i do? i ate them anyways. they were only burnt on one side and one does not like to waste one's precious food items.
so it's been a week. so it has. but i can say this for myself: i'm no sarah stratton. no sirree.
i was afraid that andrea wouldn't get to my place in time to get ready and go out for dinner before the ballet. i was already showered and dressed and was pacing around and trying unsuccessfuly to print the tickets when i saw her and dean drive up the van. apparently i told them to turn left when it was really right, which is the difference of ending up in new west or vancouver. i was unsure when i gave that direction and did say to go west also, but andrea denies it because that would take some of the blame off my shoulders.
"i was hoping you could do my hair." says andrea wistfully when i tell her we don't have much time and she better hurry up and get ready. "look at the way it dried." she complained. i looked and it looked fine to me but i didn't waste any time arguing about it. i was at a loss. i told her that i didn't have the sarah-katie magic of doing other people's hair. "but yours always looks nice." always is going a bit too far. so i decided to do the up do for fancy times for the hate-your-hair-days. it looked pretty good on her too. still i'm sure that someone else could have done better. and andrea got the chance be on the end that complains that you're pulling too hard. and i again got to hear the story of gram yanking her hair when she didn't like how it had turned out or made a mistake. gram did my hair too, but i only remember the story of the mouse princess and the cup of water with the comb in it.
we made it to the thai house just in time. they were really nice there. i always enjoy their service. very quiet, but solicitous, filling up water fufilling your whims... :) we had pad thai and the red coconut curry chicken in the coconut bowl. both were delicious. i was glad that i was eating with a clarke because of the speed factor. if i had been eating with fatima or barb, for example, i would have been more stressed about the time because we still had to walk to the centre (that's it's real name) and everything. i had forgotten my cell phone and neither of us had watches, so we kept asking the waiter for the time. so anyways we got the rest of our pad thai packaged up and we went to pay. this is where the mix up occured. we both got the thai house drink (a very coconut drink) and we shared everything else, so we split the bill right in half. i payed interac and put the tip of two something on there, which came to 20.50. andrea had a 20 dollar bill and only had to give it to them and that would be it. but the waiter made the mistake of saying 'would you like me to break this for you?' which totally threw her off and she ended up only paying 18, which left only a 2 dollar tip. i didn't really get what was going on so when she asked me how much she should leave for a tip i said 2 dollars because i didn't catch on that she just paid the rest from what i paid, nullifying my tip. so we did jip them and i feel bad too because they are really great there. i hope they don't recognize me the next time i go there. oh well, it was a good thing to tease andrea about.
the ballet: i loved it. i wasn't sure exactly how i would like a ballet, not knowing much of the dancing arts, but it was just so beautiful. the swans were by far my favourite part (i suppose they're everyone's). they were so graceful and the total effect of them was moving. i personally did not relish the men in tights. the bad guy, rothbart, was particularily UNdelightful in body shape. i told andrea in intermission, when she was padding about without her shoes on without my knoweldge (i didn't know until we returned to our seats and i saw black pumps under her seat) that i thought he was icky. she agreed that his body shape was wierd like the top half didn't match the bottom half. after she told me that she realized that he had lots of padding on to make him look muscular and maybe that's what was 'off' about his looks. siegfried had a large round well defined bum high on his muscular haunches. (when i say defined i mean each cheek, if you know what i'm saying.) he also had a very short torso. at least his costume made it seem so. we had great seats and i was glad we forked out the ten extra bucks or so to sit in the dress circle. we were in the very front row of the dress circle and over a little to the left. we had a good view of the depth and yet were still close enough to really see faces and cosutmes and the like. anyways it was amazing; another lovely notch on my life cultural experiences.
because of our late night into early morning talk the alarm blast was rude awakening. it took two blasts to rouse me from the covers. i crawled over andrea and pulled a skirt and blouse out of the closet. karey was brushing her teeth in the bathroom. she told me she wasn't going to conference because she had to do some stuff at work so she would listen to it there. elicia was on the island, so it was just heather and i. on the way there i kept looking at my gas gage, hoping it would rise up out of the red just a little bit so i could make it to church without buying gas at 117, but gas gauge would not capitulate to my demands. so we stopped and i reluctantly put ten dollars worth in, which didn't even go up to the quarter mark. dizgraceful. then i picked up barb and she promised to go to wendy's with me as per general conference tradition. we sat beside eric and his new girlfriend the russian girl who i don't know her name but is very nice. at the intermediate hymn i looked around to see if people were going to stand, or if i would be alone. i saw jonathon rise and that was all i needed to stand and then everybody else did too. after that session was over eric told me that it was nice how i stood and everybody followed. that boy. i told him that we always stand for the intermediate song in conference and that i had seen jonathon stand before me. "so you were watching jonathon and i was watching you." yep. conference was really good as usual. saturdays are always my best days of conference. i think i have way more attention span at the beginning and by the end it's a depleted store and that makes a difference. anyways i liked the talk by the young woman president (?) about bodies and Elder Holland's talk to the young women was really good and i loved President Faust's talk on "the light in their eyes." i had a few more favourites but i'd have to look at my notes. On sunday President Hinckley gave a beautiful talk on forgiveness which really touched me. all in all i was inspired to be better and try harder like President Hinckley always says.
on saturday layne and dean and andrea and i played trivial pursuit. a game was my idea of course. i would have played anything, but andrea said dean only plays trivia games, and dean was balking at playing a game anyways, so trivial pursuit it was. i always enjoy a good game of tp, as most people know. layne and dean were really tired from a night of no sleep. but that didn't stop dean from knowing most of the answers. and dean often said them out loud even when it wasn't his turn. andrea and layne were also naughty like this at times. some people just don't know how to keep their information to themselves. i had to reprimand quite a few times. dean had all his pie pieces way before me, but took forever to roll into the middle. by this time we had been playing for hours and we wanted to be finnished. layne often snoozed when it wasn't his turn. then he perked up and started coaching dean on where to go and what to roll so as to end the game sooner. just when i had all my pies and was approaching the middle, dean got his answer correct and we all cheered. we were starving by this point and layne and dean were going to go out to get a coffee and i told them to get a treat while they were at it. andrea made a delicious salmon dinner with boiled potatoes and they came back with a dairy queen ice cream pizza (peanut butter fudge. yum). the boys had been conspiring to watch life aquatic all evening even though andrea and i didn't want to see it. they thought that they were really cool. the cool boy team. so we let them watch it and we went into the bedroom and looked at pictures and talked. i wasn't a very good hostess to the boys. didn't give them blankets and pillows or anything, but i was tired of their 'cool boy' antics and let them fend for themselves. andrea and i looked at pictures until four in the morning. i've never met my match of long attention span until now. i found lots of picures that i had totally forgotten about. it was quite a satisfying walk down memory lane. many memory lanes. it was however a disatisfyingly short sleep. but that's the price you pay.
after conference karey, sarita and i watched the best two years which karey had finally successfully borrowed from kyla. it was pretty good. i liked it. was even moved at parts. i kind of miss my mission days. i was so young and fresh and it was such a good growing experience. i was so enthusiastic. i hope that i am not and do not get jaded. meanwhile linda made this good spinich curry and chandra and vicki came over. by six thirty i was fading into a deep sleep in my orange chair while everyone talked so i went to bed, managed to read some scriptures and fell asleep by seven. got 12 hours of sleep and it felt sooooo good.
tonight selina and i go to the season opening symphony. i can't wait. i hope tovey gets us to sing O Canada again.
