it was good. we got a lot of tasty treats at taste of vancouver. we strategized that it would be best if we shared each thing we got. that we could cover more food ground if you know what i mean. plaza of nations was packed with people on the prowl for the good eats. what we ate:
1.) spicy chilli squid. -so good! one of our favourites. it was deep fried and thick and the spicy chilli was a little sweet. that was from dockside restaurant on granville island. it was the first place i went to and i put my tickets to pay for it in the box you were supposed to put your business cards in for a draw or something. oh well and oops.
2.) crab cakes with roasted red pepper sauce- yum. another favourite. on the walk to the 'venue' from our parking spot we heard a snippet of a conversation about crab cakes from a passerby. which served to whet our whistles and strengthen our determination to get crab cakes of our own. there were a couple of places serving crab cakes but i'm glad we chose fish cafe because the red pepper sauce was pure goodness
3.) prawns with mango chutney - dug the chutney. the mangos were fresh and i do love fresh mango dahling.
4.) chicken stew -it was a hearty tomato based chalk full of chicken kind of stew
5.) spicy california sushi and shrimp sushi. - california sushi is not my fave, but this spicy version surprised me.
6.) beef gyro - this was by far the best gyro i've ever had. the beef was soooo good and it had red and white sauce and the pita was soft and warm and fresh. oooh it was good good good and it completes our top 3 favourites, not to mention that it was served to us by a handsome man which made it just a little sweeter if you know what i mean.
7.) we lined up for lamb chops which looked divine. the line up wound out and around but we waited patiently only to find out they were out of lamb just before we got there. so we appeased ourselves on their double fudge brownie. and it did curb the pain of disappointment a little.
8.) karey and elica finished way before us and they gave us their last two tickets, so we each got our own soda, which we shared anyways. we got birchbeer and creme. both quite delightful
9.) thai lettuce wrap was our last item, i believe. i was so full and we only had one ticket (worth .50) left, so we found a family and gave it to them.
other memorable moments at taste of vancouver included the weird dancing guy in his own world and seeing fatima's ex-fireman, city tv breakfast news anchorman 'hunk' (as brent would say) up close and impersonal when we stopped by the city tv tent to put our names in the draw for a fabulous backpack of prizes (like t-shirts and mugs and the like).
karey stayed to meet randy for football. we dropped elicia off at home and we did some shopping for earrings for fatima. we were looking at some sale jewlery at the bay when the geekiest middle aged store clerk came up to us. he was totally trying to banter with us. he kept holding up jewelry and saying things like it matched fatima's scarf, or "how about this one?" and look at it himself and laugh foolishly and nervously because there was one earring missing. we told him we'd call him if we needed him. later we were browsing near him again and overheard him with another girl. "well i'm still looking." she said. "ok, well do you want me to keep it at the counter for you?" he asked solicitously. "if you need to." she stammered in a step-offish kind of way. (ie. she thought he was being too pushy) "well, er...not that i need to, but for convenience...what was your name?" he called after her as she was escaping, obviously not wanting to put anything on hold. when she told him i could tell she was annoyed. i found it all quite entertaining. he turned to us "i guess you still don't need me?" "nope." i answered cheerfully. he said something noncosequential and we basically ignored him, much more skilled at avoided unwanted 'help' from the the help, than poor so-and-so. we didn't find anything there. but we languished in lip gloss at the mac section, painting each other's hands with prospective colours. when fatima was ready to buy no one was ready to help her, which i find quite typical at that particualr mac location. we had time to put green eyeshadow (to go with my green sweater of course) on me and stare around bored and waiting. finally i said we should go. "i don't think you should buy anthing here." i told fatima. being the one in need of lipglass she answered "let's come back on the way out." which is what we did. the girl that promised to come back to us and never did asked us "have you been helped?" a little too late missypants.
back at home i made us mango peach smoothies and salty popcorn. we set our chairs side by side, got our pillows got our blankets and talked for hours in front of a blank screen. eventually we did start watching fatima's mom's favourite indian movie. pinjar. fatima said for a while her mom watched it every day. well i think it's good too. it was three hours so we didn't get to finish it yet, but we will this week. i like it. i feel for poor puro and her brother and even rashid can i feel for.
fatima also said that her mom loves johnny cash too. she listens to him in the morning. fatima gave me a herbie somebody cd that she burnt for me. herbie collaberates with lots of other artists on this album. i like it. karey said if she was named herbie she would change her name. i kind of like the name of herbie. it's cute. herbie. herb. unless you think of herb from wkrp in cincinatti. not cute.
it was a day full to the brim with fatima and laura good times. and laura saw that it was good. and she was thankful.
