archie and betty

pne was fun. i was alone for most of my time there. everyone went their different ways. the way i went was hot fudge sundae, beef in a bun, a little motor cross, and then i watched the pig and duck races--always a good time. but the best part of the night was in the mooternity section. i spent an hour watching a calf being born. when i got there a calf had just been born and his mom was licking him. she licked him for a good 45 minutes. the farmer man got three names from the crowd and you cheered for the name you wanted. i cheered for archie and those who cheered with me, won. archie is a rare red holstien. meanwhile the mom in nextdoor was taking her sweet time giving birth. when i got there she was lying on her side heaving big heaves, but then she stood up and grazed. the whole time you could see these two little hooves sticking out. it was packed solid around there. i kept hearing people behind me answering their phones and saying "ya, i'm at the pne watching a calf being born... no, i'm serious... we're having a moment." we were having a moment. i felt a lump in my throat. birth always does that to me. it's so wow. when the mom cow finally lay down and got back down to business, things started happening. with each new heave you could see more of the calf. we all oohed and ahhed. everyone was so excited. finally once half the calf was out the farmer man tugged the rest of it out. the new calf was a girl and we named her betty. i voted for lucy but lost the cheering contest. ah well at least i got archie. archie's mom kept coming over during betty's birth and started licking her through the bars before she was even out. no one can fault archie's mom for not being a diligent licker. but i think she annoyed betty's mom a little. like hello, you've got your own calf to lick.

we lost daniel at the pne. he didn't come back at the appointed time at the appointed place and after waiting 25 minutes we had to leave without him. i didn't want to because i was worried about him. he's my faithful kitchen guy and he gets confused easily. i hope he finds his way back home. he does have a bus pass.

going to bed now.
